John is known to have owned the Queen Adelaide from circa 1875 which he
sold to the Noakes Brewery in November 1882 for the sum of £2,200.00.
However as part of the sale he leased the pub for 31 years for a rent of
£84.00 per annum. Research however shows he did not stay in residence as
the 1891 census shows one Arthur Clark as publican living with his
family. It appears John had sub-let the Queen Adelaide to Arthur Clark
as he is known to have been publican at the Horse & Groom in 1900.
