James'
mother was five month pregnant when they set sail from the West India
Docks, London in September 1841. He was born aboard the Mary Ann, within
Nelson Harbour two days before the family disembarked and is probably
the youngest immigrant to have landed in New Zealand. He ran away from home in 1850,
following a family argument taking the family bible from which he
taught himself to both read and write, becoming a Blacksmith and
Wheelwright before finally settling as a farmer.
