Met Charles whilst walking, along Upper Street, Islington, home from
work at the departmental store, where she worked, in the Holloway Road.
A whirlwind romance they were married within six months. Following their
wedding Alma often served in the family's general store in Brooksby
Street and behind the bar of the William IV in Thornhill Road, whilst
her father was landlord.
On moving to Mitcham, South London, after her fathers death, Alma took a
variety of jobs over the following years. Before the birth of her second
son, Alma again took up shop work serving for Hutchinson & Sons, a local
bakery and confectioners, in their branch next to the Granada cinema at
Tooting Broadway.
With Kevin old enough to attend school Alma took part-time work with a
soft toy manufacturer, based in Colliers Wood, once making a three foot
high self standing teddy bear. This work was mainly carried out at home
but she would often take her two sons into the works, during school
holidays, to collect further materials and deposit the completed toys.
After the death of Charles her second daughter, Vera, was working in the
laboratories of a local sweet factory, famous for their Murry Mints,
where she found Alma a position in the administration offices until the
factories closure. By this time Alma had taken to office work taking a
similar position at the offices of James Walker, jewellers, in Streatham
Hill. Though she could have returned to the shop floor, as it were,
being offered the chance of managing one of their high street shops.
Following retirement Alma's physical health declined leaving her
confined to a wheel chair for the final fourteen or so years before her
sudden death.
